Gouverneur has welcomed many new teachers over the past few years. Today, we introduce the new orchestra teacher, Ms. J. Streeter, who happens to be the twin sister of our other Ms. Streeter. She grew up right here in Gouverneur, surrounded by music. Her father was the lead singer and guitarist for a band called the Adirondack Play Boys, which sparked her lifelong passion for music. Though she always knew she wanted to teach, she discovered her love for music education later on.
Ms. Streeter began her teaching career with orchestra for grades 3-12 in Brewster, then moved to Saranac Lake to teach music to K-5 students. When Mr. Buell, the former orchestra teacher, retired, the school quickly reached out to her, and the timing worked well—she wanted to be closer to her family and now lives just 10 minutes away, compared to her previous home in Saranac Lake.
Ms. Streeter has traveled to nine countries, including England, Portugal, Pakistan, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, Russia, and India, where she taught music to children with special needs. She also spent time in Russia teaching English. Passionate about her work, she believes that “more time should be dedicated to learning about yourself and exploring,” which she brings into her teaching by encouraging students to try new things and discover more about themselves.
