Gouverneur High School has welcomed a new staff member, Mrs. Emma York, who will be teaching Global 10, U.S. History, and AP European History. Mrs. York has moved extensively along the East Coast to pursue her educational goals. She completed her undergraduate degree in History and her master’s degree in Secondary Social Studies Education at the University of Pennsylvania, where she was one of the highest-performing students in her class.
Mrs. York has always aspired to be a Social Studies teacher, driven by her passion for history. One of her main inspirations for pursuing this career was her AP U.S. History class, which broadened her knowledge daily; there was never a dull moment. She is committed to helping students reach their highest potential and holding them to high standards throughout the school year.
She believes setting high expectations encourages students to “be the best they can be.” In her classroom, she aims to create a welcoming environment where every student feels they are an integral part of the learning process, takes pride in their work, and can hopefully bring home a fun fact from class to share at the dinner table.
Originally from an urban area, Mrs. York views her transition to a rural setting as an exciting opportunity. She appreciates learning new educational approaches that differ from her own experiences and enjoys expanding her expertise each day. She chose Gouverneur for its close-knit community and seized the opportunity to join the school.
Mrs. York is enthusiastic about the upcoming year and has the best intentions for all her students. We look forward to seeing her around!
