On Monday, January 30th, the Gouverneur Varsity Girls Basketball team took on the Malone Huskies, kicking off Pink Zone. Pink Zone is a week-long fundraiser for the Gouverneur Breast and Ovarian Cancer Fund, which aids cancer patients with medical expenses. Throughout the week, there are several games at which T-shirts and concessions are sold to raise money. Starting the basketball game last night were Chloe Smith, Elizabeth Riutta, Lia Canell, Meredith Bush, and Caitlyn Storie. Acting as subs during the game were Addison Conklin, Courtney Forsythe, Madelynne Hay-Spano, and Rylynn Martin-Mcintyre. The team got off to a rocky start with the Huskies scoring the first point. The Wildcats caught up quickly, but the teams were stuck in a back and forth battle for the first half of the game. However, in the third quarter, the Wildcats picked up their game. They fought their way to gain a lead of ten points. While the Huskies climbed their way back up during the last quarter, the Wildcats continued to put up a fight. Scoring several more baskets and maintaining great defense, the Wildcats won the game 45-43. The Gouverneur Bitty Ball team prepared a very special half time show, choreographed to the song “Try Everything” by Shakira. Not only did their show display their skills, but it also served as a source of motivation for the Varsity girls as well as a reminder to everyone to never give up. This game was a great start to Pink Zone. On Wednesday, February 1st, and Thursday, February 2nd, the Gouverneur Wrestling and Varsity Boys Basketball teams competed and held Pink Zone events, respectively. Additionally, on Friday, February 3rd, many people dressed in pink to partake in the Pink Out at Gouverneur High School. Congratulations to all of the sports teams that hosted Pink Zone events and thank you to everyone who came out to support them!
